Born in İzmir in February 1955. After his secondary education at Batı Koleji, İzmir in 1967-1973, Aksungur received training in art at the Advanced Sculpture Department of the İstanbul State Academy of Fine Arts. During his first year at the Academy he studied under Ali Teoman Germener, Özer Kabaş, Altan Gürman and also received atelier training from Şadi Çalık, Hüseyin Gezer and Tamer Başoğlu. His graduation project won a High Honours Award. Since his undergraduate years, Aksungur has participated in numerous competitions announced for statues and memorials and has taken part in many individual and collective art events. On May 27, 1982 Aksungur joined the faculty of the Advanced Sculpture Department of the State Academy of Fine arts, now renamed Mimar Sinan University, as research assistant. On July 1983, he received his Ph.D. in art and was appointed as deputy associate professor on February 9, 1988. October 25, 1994 saw him as associate professor and on May 2, 2000 he was named full professor. From 2002 until 2006 he served as Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts. Aksungur is served Rector of the Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts 2006-2011. Aksungur continues his art practice in Istanbul.
